Direct from SD Command, Major Dombroski, regarding two separate incidents in Otterbein:
“On Wed 8/20 around 2245 hrs, units took a report for an assault at Sharp and Henrietta when a life guard from Otterbein Pool was approached by group who stated “What are you doing white boy” and punched him in the face. He ran away from the group towards a woman who called police. One suspect was wearing a black bandana with white writing. Investigation is ongoing.
On Thurs the 21 of August 2014 at 2127 hours Ofc. Brice was dispatched to the 100 block of W. Montgomery in reference to an attempt armed robbery. The victim (another lifeguard) stated he noticed two of the unknown males were walking together. One of the males was approx. 16-19 y/o, 5’5”- 5’7” wearing army green shorts with no shirt dark complexion, athletic build with tattoos on his chest. The second male was approx. 16-19 y/o, wearing a muddy green/brown t shirt with shorts. The third male was approx. 16-19 y/o, 5’10”-6’01, thin/athletic build, soft-spoken, wearing a white plain t shirt with shorts a dark hat with a short hairstyle (later identified as Sidney Joyner), walked out of the alley on W. Montgomery, and met up with the other males. The shirtless male, yelled, “Hey white boy!” When the victim turned around, the shirtless male proceeded to throw a rock, striking the victim in the lower lip. The shirtless male then asked, “What you got?” When the two unknown suspects noticed that he was bleeding they started to back off. At which time, Mr. Joyner began walking towards the victim and asked, “Are you okay?” When Mr. Joyner got within arm’s reach of the victim, he lunged at him with a pocket knife. The victim quickly jumped backwards to avoid being stabbed. The victim then began to yell, gaining the attention of several residents in the area who exited their homes. Mr. Joyner and the two unknown males then fled on foot through an alley towards W. Henrietta. The victim received 11 stitches to the right side of his lip.
After speaking with the victim police officers conducted an area canvas and noticed a male, identified as Sidney Joyner sitting on the steps at 1005 Leadenhall St. Mr. Joyner fit the exact physical description given by the victim. During the field interview, Mr. Joyner appeared very nervous, looking down at the ground in an attempt to conceal his face, and did not provide any form of identification. Mr. Joyner was transported to the Southern District for a formal interview. The victim positively identified Mr. Joyner as the individual with the knife, who attempted to stab him. Joyner was placed under arrest.”
UPDATE FROM SD COMMAND SATURDAY 8/23:
“The suspect who was arrested in relation to the attempted armed robbery on Thursday (W. Montgomery) was ID as the suspect in the assault that occurred the previous night (Sharp and Henrietta).”
